Canon VIXIA HV30 High Definition Camcorder user reviews
Cons: Default white balance leans towards pink. Build quality feels cheap - plastic pieces are a bit loose fitting. The manual is written in too many languages, and perhaps in an effort to save trees some of the functions are not well explained in the space that's provided.
Other Thoughts: Very pleased with this cam. I like the touchscreen of my Sony HC1 better, but I haven't run into any major problems with the HV30. The menu is easy to navigate, at least that's what I've found thus far.
"
Cons: NONE
Other Thoughts: For a look at a sample video I made go to vimeo dot com/1365632 and play my indoor video to see how well it does. This is RAW video no added lights or effects. It starts off with reflective lighting after sun went down for you to see the noise level tehn to the indoor shots. Just to let you know I out put the clip to the WMV and there is a little more noise than the MPEG or MTS file has but it will give you an idea how awesome this camera really is.
Hope this helps out your decision on making this purchase.
"
I appreciated that I could shoot fantastic HD video right out of the box. Operation was straight forward and the default settings served well in indoor environments. Playback on a 50" plasma TV in 1080i was as good or better than the best HD channels I can receive. This camera gives the feel of quality in video previously only realized through multi-million dollar movie studios.
I also appreciate the optional accessories that come with the camera. There is a HD component cable, USB cable, composite cable for standard definition TV, remote control, and image software, and battery of course.
Manual is easy to understand with a wealth of detailed information.
Price is exceptional for what you get.
Cons: The camera gets 5 eggs out of 5 simply because it's fantastic, but that's not to say that there aren't some minor flaws.
I don't like that the lens cap is built in like a shutter. This means no external lens cap, therefore if the lens cap on this camera gets damaged, then the camera itself suffers damage which kind of defeats the purpose. A cheap, plastic external lens cap would have been appreciated.
The camera makes a rattling noise when moved. It's rather unnerving because it sounds like it's broken when it isn't. As a matter of fact, in the troubleshooting section this issue is addressed and it is explained that this is normal and not a malfunction. I don't like it, but it doesn't affect performance.
Imaging software is largely worthless. It's for still image editing and not video editing. Windows Movie Maker cannot do the camera justice, which means you'll want Adobe After Effects and/or Sony Vegas for HD video files on the computer. But, that's not a fault of the camera
Other Thoughts: This is by far the best camera I've ever used. Full of options, accessories, and flat out mind blowing video quality means that after you've played with this a bit, you feel that paying only $599 is just outright robbery. I'm extremely satisfied with this purchase and also with Newegg's service, competitive pricing, and speedy shipping. "
I have now bought two more and completely replaced the old three camera system I used for multi-camera projects. I even occasionally use the HV30 camera as a feeder deck for my Avid editing system. Firewire & HDMI outputs enable flexibility in the post-production side. I am also now looking at adding a Depth-of-Field adapter to my HV30 to enhance the 24p film-look mode of the camera.
The bottom line? The Canon VIXIA HV30 High Definition Camcorder is a professional level camera for a consumer level price. It is one of the best equipment investments I have ever made in 23 years of the Video production business"
