Canon VIXIA HF100 Camcorder user reviews

"Pros: Canon VIXIA HF100 Camcorder is a great camera for its price. Still images are only so-so. There is too much loss of quality on anything over 8 x 10; however, most people aren’t buying it for stills. Snap shot size is really not bad. The video image quality is excellent; not quite as good as satellite or cable but very, very good. Editing is a problem as others have noted. I tried the Pixela program that comes with the camera; it is not as bad as many have said, it just doesn’t have the multitude of options available with other programs. It is included in the price however.

I tried Corel Video Studio Pro X2 because I have used Ulead in the past and prefer its interface over the others; results were extremely disappointing. I hate to say anything good about Sony but Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9 Pro Pack does a really good job of producing very good (not excellent) quality standard DVDs. It certainly has just about everything an amateur can ask for as far as features. I don’t like their timeline

Cons: Still images could be better. Battery life could be longer. Could come with an HDMI cable.

Other Thoughts: I love it. No complaints at all.

"Canon Vixia HF-100 produce .m2ts files. I am editing these m2ts files with Pinnacle Ultimate Studio 11. Not easy to edit straight from m2ts but is working. A work around: encode the m2ts files to mpeg-2 HD720p and edit the mpegs. This way works very easy in Pinnacle Studio 11. My PC: AMD Athlon 64X2 Dual Core 4400+, RAM 2GB, Video card: XFX Nvidia 9800 GT 512 MB."

"Pros: Canon VIXIA HF100 Camcorder itself is very nice. The video quality is beautiful. The camcorder is well beyond my video shooting skills. It is light and small. I love that the video records to sd card. 16gb = 2 hours of 1920x1080 1080i video

Cons: The supplied software is a joke. I immediately regretted installing the software. The supplied canon software does not include any software that can interact with the camera. When connecting via USB to download videos from the camera, the camera says not to power it off or disconnect it from the USB, but the supplied software cannot be used to break the USB connection, so I had to just unplug it. It is much easier to just pull the memory card and read the memory card directly. The editing software is fecking awful(it can play the video, but the interface is lousy), so I did not spend very much time with it, and just got a third party editing suite. The AVCHD video format is still not very well supported in software, so be prepared to spend a few hours getting it to work.

Other Thoughts: I would have given a 5 star rating, but the supplied software is really lousy.

"I can't remember exactly what I had before; it was a Sony camcorder that would record minature dvd's. This Canon VIXIA HF100 Camcorder is SO much better. I felt like I was taking a risk at this price but it was WELL worth it. Very impressed with the quality. The only improvement to be made is battery life. Depending on the settings used batter life varies between 1.5-2.5 hours of constant use. Also, SD is DEFINITELY the way to go when storing your media content. 8 GB SD card was more than plenty of room for HD recording."

"Pros: Canon VIXIA HF100 Camcorder is banging. Small enough to fit in my North Face (jacket) but size doesn't matter when it comes to quality. This camera has such high quality, that I've already sold my 3CCD SD model. Great video, great sound, great recording media use!

Cons: 1hr/8GB at 1920x1080 means it's very memory hungry, but the 3 other settings (1440x1080) still give you a ton of quality, (8gb/3hours on lowest).
Battery life is only about 45-50 mins. The extended life battery (buy elsewhere) works great and gives me about 3 hours.

Other Thoughts: Sony Vegas 140 bucks, will edit AVCHD down to 4:3 SD on DVD, wide screen DVD SD, and if you select "make blue ray disk" you don't have to use BR. You can use 4.7-8.5.GB DVDs, you just get shorter movie times. This will give you wide screen HD DVDs, but must be played in a BRay player, or PS3. Now go get a quad core cause it takes me about 1 hour/10 mins of video to render. Altho i made a RAM disk and it was MUCH faster to load and save to there as its very hard drive intensive to save 30 frames of video/sec, even with my WD Raptor. I have 24gb ram, 18GB is acting as a RAM drive, so I download to my 18GB ram drive and save to that drive, and the render times are cut in half!
